Obama Proposes 30 Day Hack Notification
President Obama is pushing new legislation called the Personal Data Notification and Protection Act. This law, if enacted, will standardize the consumer notification requirements in the event of data breach. Under the law, companies would be required to notify consumers within 30 days of the discovery of a data breach.
Currently, each state drafts its own consumer protection laws regarding data breaches. Notification requirements differ based on location and the severity of the incident. This creates a web of varying requirements based on the location of the consumer and the company.
President Obama will also focus on other related privacy issues. He aims to enhance protection of student data, and he will be pushing a voluntary code of conduct for utilities to follow when protecting customer data.
Obama will deliver the State of the Union address on January 20th at 9PM EST.
