How To Remove The DigiNotar Trusted CA

On news that hackers may have generated over 200 fake SSL certificates from the DigiNotar CA, some people are wondering if this CA should be trusted until they can confirm that they have cleaned everything up. Even a patch to Chromium has been submited to block the fake certs. Here’s how to remove the DigiNotar CA cert, just in case you don’t want to risk stumbling across any of those fake certificates. Please note that the DigiNotar Root CA certificate my not exist on all computers. These instructions are for Windows, but the procedures are similar for the browsers on other platforms.

Firefox:

  • Open the Preferences configuration tool.
  • Click on the Advanced tab.
  • Click on the Encryption tab.
  • Click View Certificates.
  • Find the DigiNotar Root CA in the list.
  • Click the Delete or Distrust button, then click OK.
  • Click OK to close the Preference configuration tool.

Google Chrome:

  • Open the Options configuration tool.
  • Click Under the Hood.
  • Click Manage Certificates in the HTTPS/SSL section.
  • Click on the Authorities tab.ted
  • Find the DigiNotar Root CA in the list.
  • In the popup window, click the Trusted Root Certification Authorities tab.
  • Find the DigiNotar Root CA in the list.
  • Click Remove.

Internet Explorer 8:

  • Select Internet Options from the Tools menu.
  • Click on the Content tab.
  • Click on the Certificates button.
  • In the popup window, click the Trusted Root Certification Authorities tab.
  • Find the DigiNotar Root CA in the list.
  • Click Remove.
