Trustworthy Sites?
By now, news of the New York Times malware scam is starting to spread across the internet. The malicious site started out as a relatively innocuous ad, but was swapped with a fake virus warning to trick users into downloading malicious software. This ad went through legitimate channels to get setup, and is forcing the New York Times website to revisit their advertising display methods. The Times did not intend for an ad such as this to go through, but they are taking steps to correct it.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, the Sears Holdings Management Company (SHMC) enticed people to participate in a research program by offering them ten dollars. After signing up for My SHC Community and installing a bit of software, SHMC began collecting marketing data from their members. According to Jim Googins, the data collection extended beyond simple web surfing habits. Well known spyware research Ben Edelman agreed.
After investigating the situation, the Federal Trade Commission issued a press release announcing the settlement. According to the settlement, SHMC must stop collecting data and destroy all data that it has collected so far. They must also provide email and telephone support to anyone that needs help installing the software.
